Images like the khamsa have been symbolically imbued for thousands of years with associations of protection against harm, evil, and illness. These symbols are often dismissed due to the devastating effects of colonialism, which has undermined and erased ancient and folk practices. This work asserts that peace of mind is the greatest form of defense. To engrave an apotropaic symbol was to transform the very thing you feared into an object of protection. This was powerful because it granted you absolute certainty that nothing would destroy you and divert you from your path. This bone-deep assurance backed by faith is critical to having hope for yourself and others.
